Alright, i have Windows XP MCE OEM installed on my laptop right now and i need to wipe the computer but i only have a XP Pro OEM on disk. Can i use my MCE OEM cd key?

The digital signature will be different though and XP will know that because when it connects to Miicrosoft it'll say, what the hell am I doing with an MCE2005 code?

its not illegal. the mce disc's are the xp pro for 1 disc and then the mce patch(kinda like a service pack). you install xp pro using your mce key and then when its installed you load up mce. how is that illegal? its the way microsoft made it. i swear some of you guys dont know right from left when it comes to whats legal and illegal, yall'r so quick to assume.

the first two media centers were based on the home version

i had 2004, and it was definitely just the home version of xp

media center 2005 was windows pro 2003 with the media center patch on it

so it depends which version he had. if it's 2004, it's a proprietary lisence, i believe

It is illegal to use any Windows CD key for any other version than it was released to be used with. (i.e. usind a MCE key to install XP or vice versa) Thread closed.
