now to clarify the title a bit better, im looking at getting an am3 board but really would like to save a few bucks right now as money is tighter than normal. So I was thinking that i could buy a 1g or 2g stick of ram and put it in the am3 board and then in a couple of months buy another stick or just buy a tri kit and fill up the slots? Would this work or will it cause problems? Im not worried about speed at all since my first concern will be transferring handwritten documents to hard drive storage.

PS: I really do use the search function:o

One stick will work, but the memory will only run in Single Channel mode, which will present a decrease in performance, and considering your tasks, you probably won't notice a difference.

Also, Dual Channel kits are sold in Matched Pairs, which are ideal for Dual Channel systems, ensuring the rig is running in true Dual Channel mode.

It is recommended to buy kits in matched pairs on Dual Channel boards, but it's not required, and there's always a slight chance, however slim, that the memory won't run in Dual Channel if the sticks aren't matched,.
