i have an hp media center m8300f pc. I really do not like vista. I want to install xp pro. I had the hp techs on a chat, they tell me i cannot dual boot xp pro with vista because hp sets up their machines to only run vista. They tell me i would have to buy vista and xp pro from a retail store in order to do this.

Is there any reason i cannot just remove vista and install xp pro?

i have read that a machine built for vista would have driver problems if you tried to install xp pro on it. Any thoughts

Yes you can. I believe the method involves shrinking your volume through Vistas' "Computer Management" inside "Administrative Tools". After you shrink the volume, I believe you can create an extended partition on which you can install XP. Please correct me if I'm wrong but I thought I read this in an article because I wanted to dual boot Ubuntu to check it out.

Good Luck!

If what Damian Stormbow says doesn't work, not sure about it either, see if you can get your hands on Norton Partition Magic. It's a great partitioning program that allows you to shrink or extend a partition with ease.
