My computer used to be a stock HP m8200n media center pc
I have added a graphics card, changed the power supply and moved the whole thing into a new case

These are some of the specs:
cpu: AMD athlon X2 6000+
Ram 3 gb
graphics card: Nvidia Geforce 8800gt
case Antec 902
psu: coolermaster 460w power supply

My question is with the stock motherboard that HP gave ( model number MCP61PM-HM ) will I be able to overclock or will they have locked it. And would overclocking software still work on it.

My second question is with the the cpu cooler hp gave will it be cool enough if i overclock it. I'm not gonna go crazy i just want a decent overclock. I probably won't boost the voltage and if I do it will be a small bump. I'm hoping that the Antec 902 will help keep the cpu cool enough.

here's a link to some motherboard specs if it helps

There may be a Custom/modified bios that will allow you to OC that Hp but good luck finding one.

Even if you could OC i doubt it would overclock very well,i would invest in a new board :)

I had a stock HP computer and the BIOS was locked. I've ever heard that if you flash the BIOS for a latest one maybe it will not be locked, but I'm not sure and I didn't make it because you lose the warranty.
I didn't test overclocking software on my old HP. Now I've all changed so I'm no longer locked ^^

You could try clockgen which is software based,But that also didnt work on my old HP.

They usually lock it if its the stock motherboard...if you go into the BIOS and don't have a CPU multiplier etc that you can change/access then its locked.

Depends...I always buy after market for ANY cooler overclocked or not......I found that stock never does a good enough job.

Id spend $80 and get a decent AM2+ board and overclock it that way.

HP is kind of anal with locking their bios. Same with Dell and a lot of other OEM providers. If you don't increase the voltage, you shouldn't find much if anything in the way of a temp increase.

yes that's the voltage raising which will get higher temp, not much the clock.
Personnaly I understand that great marks lock their BIOS. If they don't, imagine how many PC will die after a too hard overclock and return in warranty! All that marks won't lose that money.

Not a whole lot, as they could set limits to voltage... but its more the fact they want you to pay to upgrade to the "faster" processor for more money.

You Can!

I have written an hp BIOS for the HP Nettle2. If you are interested simply ask. It has all of the OC options availiable. IF you want it please reply by sending me an email at [email protected]
