Can I put a Firewall on a single Computer?

Can I put a Firewall (Hardware) on a single Computer?

I was wondering if it's a smart idea to install a firewall (hardware) on a single computer that is not hooked up to a network but is hooked to cable internet? Can it be done? Mostly I've seen them on networks and I was wondering if installing it on a single pc is overkill on protection? My buddy does something like that but he deals with some very sensitive stuff so he needs the protection to keep his clients safe.

Personal thought is if your a normal user..aka game or web surf then that is major overkill for protection. If you have stuff someone would want to steal on your PC then all the protection you can get is worth while.

Yeah you are right but in my personal opinion you can not go overkill on protection its better to have more protection than needed than not enough.
Really this is up to you what ever you personally want firewall or no firewall go for it its not going to hurt you either way
 
I noticed that some of the firewalls make you lose a lot of your speed. Is there some out there that won't reduce your download and upload speed very much? Or is there a way of adjusting it like setting up rules or something?

Software is just as good as hardware for most users...
I mean really servers only use hardware like that. :eek:
 
If you have an old computer lying around install Smoothwall. Cost=$0 and you have many configuration options. I have two running and they are great.
 
If it does not do static NATing and ACLs its not a real firewall.

nat does not equal a firewall ... home routers are not firewalls. Prosafes are really bad.

Go download PFSense, get 3 network cards. WAN, LAN, and protected LAN. Make some ACLs that block everythign for the protected LAN and there you go.

A dedicated firewall for a single computer is silly ( a nat router will do), hook it upto your lan and protect the whole lan ... if you need make more rules to p[rovide extra protection then do so.
