can I put the dvd version of linux on CDs?

On the Mandrive version downloaded here I made up the three cd set where the #1 cd started the installation right away. When going to the link you posted earlier for the 2007.1 collection there are no releases with only 4 files while the smallest sees 5 total. It sounds like you didn't download one or more files needed for what you were after there. The next two in size see 6 files. The mini has 5. The dvd-I586 has 6 as well as the dvd-X86 release.

For an easier download and choice between 32bit and 64bit versions this is the site that was used here. http://www.mandriva.com/en/download/mandrivaone You can see the options list at http://www.mandriva.com/community/mandrivaone
oh ok I missed a few files...thanks. OK how do I get all those to a cd as an image? It only lets you do one file

With BurnOn you simply download an existing iso disk image and then select it after choosing the drive to burn to. For a collection of files you then go with a burning program that shows all files and lets you add to a project. The Mandriva distro here was a set of three iso images to create a 3 cd install set of disks. The #1 cd would start the installer going when booting from it. Some sites with separated files are not intended for boot disks however. You have to run those from an existing Linux installation or create a Grub floppy.

oh sorry I forgot to say I figured it out..you just need the .iso file not the rest. I think the download messed up or something though because the cd loads everything then when its supposed to go to me making a login and everything my screen just goes to standby and it does nothing.

What program was used for burning the iso? BurnOn does work quite well for iso images that are in good shape. Then you may have seen a bad burn from a bad disk too. Don't you love tossing frisbies around?!  ggrrrrr..! :P

nope actually the problem is something with the video...I did a new burn and a new download. when I do lowest resolution like some recommend it says that the monitor isn't connected after the initial setup but if I do text only with no acpi (not sure what it means but I googled and someone said to try it) and it says video input out of range and it doesn't do anything until I press ctrl+alt+backspace then it goes to the disconnected thing again...I'll try leaving it on that message for a while tommorow. What do frisbies have to do with it?

When you have a bad burn what do you usually end up doing? Flinging disks!

Did you look over the information seen at the other site to see what was offered there as far as releases? Two of the other files are checksum like the md5 for file verification once everything is downloaded. The other site is where you simply download a complete iso ready for immediate burn to disk. Those are seen in both cd and dvd iso formats alike there.

The main problem seems to be the files you downloaded are strictly for burn to dvd-r not spread over multiple cd-rs. Unfortunately I still can't find the link for a 3 cd set that would be easier for you there. But the detailed instructions at the Mandriva link here cover a good deal. It's worth going over. http://wiki.mandriva.com/en/Docs/Installing_Mandriva_Linux

ahh....I used to throw demo cds and cracked cds to my brother and he would break them into pieces with a bat...good times. I think its my ATI video card I heard they dont get along with linux very well and one of the reveiws on newegg for my specific one said that it doesnt work with linux. Unless there is another distro that has the 3-d desktop thing and works well with ATI cards I want to keep trying to get mandriva 1 cd to work.

The distro from the first site is strictly dvd only. You have to remember that. That won't work for you since you are limited to cd-rs at the moment. The second site offers both types of iso images where you can download the one, two, or three need isos for burn to disk to make a cd set. Once you find the correct isos to download BurnOn will put each one on a separate disk and you will be set to go.

The page that makes a comparison between Vista and the latest Mandriva release is seen at http://www.mandriva.com/en/community/mandrivaone With the dvd image you have another option available to run that on a virtual MS machine where you don't even have to worry about getting it burned at all. The latest Virtual PC 2007 will run on XP as well as Vista and is ready for download at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...02-3199-48A3-AFA2-2DC0B40A73B6&displaylang=en

no thats not my problem the cd booted and everything but after the whole mandriva setup thing finishes it goes to a black screen.

That release may not be for a live cd type of installation if from the original site you posted. Different releases have different methods for installation. Are you still trying the download from the first site you posted or the second I pointed you towards with both cd and dvd images for download? The hang at the tail end of the installation suggests something maybe missing or corrupted from a bad download or burn. That would be even more likely.

yeah but I re-downloaded and re-burned so how could it be? The message it said at the end was actually input signal out of range...I wrote it down this time :) and I downloaded it from the illinois mirror link I saw at mandriva.com

The second site I posted seems far better since that has cd not just dvd images there. Once you have it burned to disk you load the desktop either KDE or Gnome and proceed to install it from there. The Illinois link seems more like a site for the advanced Linux user rather then the simplified version seen at Mandriva One.

The 2007.1 beta has seen some problems hanging up with some others as well apparently. One place you may to look over gives you a walkthrough on installing the 10.1 distro as well as links for the 9.1 and 9.2 releases. http://www.mandrake.tips.4.free.fr/install101.html

what this one: http://www.mandriva.com/en/download/mandrivaone ? If so thats torrent only and its really slow. and its not the cd I have a problem with.

The Bit torrent there will download either the 32bit or 64bit version of the live to install version of the either cd or dvd image. Once downloaded you dump the torrent used there. But the first link you originally posted won't work for you since you can't divide that across multiple cd-rs. The download you are trying to install was most likely meant to run from inside another distro like you would upgrade an earlier version of Windows by download of Vista. You upgrade or change one for another there.

The Mandriva One package allows you to run it live and then install while running it in live mode. Unfortunately I didn'tt mark the 3 cd set with the version number and have since lost the link for probably an older release like 9.2 or 10 not the latest release you are trying there. The longer time to download the One live would give you a working version there however.
