Can I Put this CPU in?

I'm upgrading my grandmothers computer. Currently, she has a processor that is 2.0GHZ, 400MHz FSB. I have an extra 2.8GHz Processor laying around..Same socket as her computer, but different FSB (533). I wanted to know if I could put this processor into her computer? Will it operate? If it is not compatable, will it damage any components?

Thanks! :)

Would need to know what computer you have so we can check cpu support. And is it a P4 or celeron processor?

You might be able to but on OEM systems such as this HP sometimes the boards can be picky about which CPUs they will and will not run, regardless of whether the socket and/or FSB is the same. I'd just stick with the Celeron, there's not likely to be a massive difference if the client is just using the PC for web browsing and emails etc.

Usually not. A cmos reset may be needed if putting the old cpu back in and it doesn't boot.

Best thing to do is going to give it a try and see if it boots into Windows with no problems, it should be just fine.

no it wont damager anything if its the same socket, as vistakid said you can damage the cpu if you force it in and bend the pins.

If i was you i would have put the processor in because i highly doubt it will damage anything but i could be wrong :S sorry i cant give you a straight answer
