im sick of people treating my computer as there own, and i want to know if i have a computer that will take alot of ram (on a 64 bit system of course) is there a way that i can set up my computer so that i can lock people from saving on my hard drive (which only contains my operating system and my select programs) and uses ram to do everything until logged off or shut down at which point it will all be lost unless saved to a flash drive or something... this is just an idea i had because my friends (and wife) keep downloading viruses and have crashed my hard drive twice in the past 2 months i have heard of businesses using something similar at some point and was just wondering if i could and if so then how?...

A Linux Live CD/DVD?

It sounds just like suited for the purpose (the OS boots from the disc, and all changes to the system are temporary & have no effect on your Windows installation).

Of course, there are a few drawbacks...

1)You can't usually install software, and even when you can, you'd lose the installation when you shut it down since it's temporary (this functionality is distro-specific).
2)It's Linux, not Windows, so you (or whoever uses it) might simply not like it or you may find some of the programs/functionality of Windows missing
3)Since it runs from a CD/DVD, it's a tad slow

You could also create a bootable Linux flash drive, where you install the OS on a flash drive and boot from it, and you can install stuff/modify the system as you please without having any effect on your Windows installation.

Of course, the above won't strictly prevent them from using your hard drive, but no viruses are going in there, and in general it's next to impossible to do anything to your HD contents by accident anyway.

You can use Deep Freeze by Faronics. Every time you reboot your system is "restored" to the state it was when you started using it.

You can use disk quota management to stop users more than a specific amount od HDD space per day/week/month.

OR, you can use a password on your account. that way, you have to be there to type it in if they want access.

oh oh i know!

use a virtual machine. i've used sun's virtual box for this. set up a vm, allocate about 10gb or so of disk space, after installing the OS, set the image to immutable, this will have the effect you want, all changes to the machine will not be saved and everytime you start that vm, it will start at the point where you set it to immutable. you can even set it up on a secondary partition or different disk entirely, so your main disk will see no difference

Stop letting your friend's use your computer, period. Buy your wife a cheep laptop.

no such thing as a cheap laptop.. she has a desktop but likes mine more. also if I don't let her and her friends use it im pretty much kicked out. my friends i have a hard time saying no to..... please stop putting me down in everything, i am getting very offended, i really don't like being talked down to especially when i know i am right or that i have a valid point. thank you.

and to everyone else thanks for the help im gonna try a couple of these and hope i can get people to not want to touch my computer thanks.

^ laptops are cheaper than desktops. You can get them on sale at best buy for slightly over $300, that's pretty cheap.

I'd just put a password on your account and lock your computer when you leave.

i can get desktops for $150 complete because i build all my systems and have alot of leftover parts.. but people just like using my stuff and i don't know why. but im looking for a money free option as i am currently broke.plus my whole concept is that i don't want to kick them off my stuff but i don't want there crap getting downloaded, honestly im about to get a new batterie for my laptop and just start letting people use my desktop as community computer

Your wife is going to kick you out if you don't let her use your computer?

Just use a virtual machine or a linux live disk. Slax is a good live disk to use because you can use their website to make a customized disk image. It installs itself to the RAM when it boots, so it'll be really fast too.

If you want to be sneaky, install a second DVD drive and turn it around backwards, so it's all internal, and set it to boot from CD before HDD.

(Or, you could just put a second hard drive with another OS in....but that wouldn't be as fun. :D )

edit: Also, I'd hate to see what you'd do if some actually said something offensive...what he said was just common sense. If people were screwing up my computer when they had their own PC's to use, I'd kick them off too...or at least give them a good talking to.

1. If your wife divorces you for you being careful about your stuff, when they've messed it off several times, theirs something wrong with this relationship.
2. Are you afraid of your friends? I don't think they would beat you up for not letting them use your computer.
3. Sorry, I guess I did seem kind of like a dick in the post from last night about the computer screen.

He was referring to a comment I made, about a comment he made, on gluing a computer screen together.:D

x2. Deep freeze is great. No matter how much you mess with the computer, everytime you restart it's restored back to new.
