to run when I tell it to? I have opened up ( scheduled tasks ) but I can't seem to find disk defragmenter for the life of me.

I want to schedule it to run once a day at 5am.

I am running XP home edition.

Thanks

There you go:

Also i dont think it's worth it running it everyday because it wont help you a bit if you run it everyday. Even if you run it everyday it will take probably few hours to complete and it will slow down your pc if you want to use it while it defragments your hard drive.

I usually run it once a week and it only takes about 4 minutes maybe 10 to 15 if I forget for a month or two but I am pretty anal about running it and it really pays off because things open up sooooo much quicker. I have never run across a box I have owned were defragging took HOURS, wow that is crazy long, I have worked on a few peoples pc's that never been defragged and it took about 45 minutes at the most.

I am going to read the article you posted now, I am assuming it will show me how to schedule it. Thanks!!

Ps, I just ran disk defragmenter and it took 2 minutes 14 seconds to run.:good:

Disk defragmenter should only be run about once a month or so unless you are installing and unistalling programs like crazy. Vista and W7 I believe has its own schedule to run defragmenter.

Just to make a note for those who do not know: USING THE COMPUTER WHILE THE HDD IS BEING DEFRAGMENTED IS NOT RECOMMENDED!AFTER THE DEFRAGMENTATION PROCESS IS COMPLETE,THE COMPUTER SHOULD ALSO BE RESTARTED!

NTFS is a self defragging file system, and you should not run defrag that often unless like mentioned above by Johnb35 you are manipulating lots and lots of data. You defrag a HD once per a week you are going to burn your HD out on disk I/O.

Only defrag when needed. Most computer users won't ever need to defrag really with modern file systems.

This is totally correct!!!

The HDD should be defragmented ONLY when needed. There is NO POINT in defragmenting the HDD so often. It won't speed up your computer if thats what you think. If you are defragmenting your HDD so often and you have barely done any changes to your computer, the defragmentation process doesn't have any effects because there is NOTHING that needs to be defragmented.Thats why it takes you only 2 - 4 minutes to finish the defragmentation process.BUT if the HDD defragmentation is needed then the process would take up to 4 hours or more depending on the size of your HDD and the size of the data on it and also depending on your free space which needs to be at least 15% in order to fully defragment your HDD.

You are torturing your HDD for no reason.Don't do it.Trust me I know what I am saying and I am sure that many others would agree with me...

Cheers!
