Can I swap any P4 with any other p4?

I have one PC with a 1.6GHz P4 and another with a 2.8GHz P4 and I would like to swap them.

Do you think I might have any problems doing that, or should it be as simple as pulling them out and swapping them and then booting up and everything is fine on both machines?

as long as they are the same socket, which most of the P4's are then you should be ok, do you have a heatsink with a fan on it to cool the proc with?

Well, both are older machines, and they are both currently in use, so they both have heatsinks and fans that are in use. I just assumed I would use the existing heatsinks and fans, I'd just have to go out and buy some thermal paste.

You should be able to unless the boards dont support the different speeds, which may be the case with a prebuilt Dell or otherwise.

Well, the one that has the slower CPU is an older gateway desktop, and the one that has the faster CPU is a Dell.

The older P4 may be a Willamena core which AFAIK is a socket 370, however the 2.8 I know to be a Northwood core, a socket 478. You should be able to notice if there's a difference as the Willamena's are much bigger. If they are the same size they should work though. :)

you mean the willamette core? only pentium 3s and p3 cellerons used socket 370. willamettes used socket 423. if the socket on your system is 423, Intel made 478-423 adapters so it should not be a problem. the 2.8 may be a prescott too, thought. or a cedar mill. highly unlikely for the cedar mill thought

Yes as said before. All that REALLY matters in this case would be the socket. You can use a faster CPU on a slower mobo, you wont see an increase in performance but it will not hurt anything, the CPU will just run at whatever the mobo allows it to:

"Your computer is only as fast as its slowest component."

Remember that and your good to go!

However, it is possible that the chipset will not support the core.
