I've decided to build a new system. About a month ago I bought a new ssd and hdd drive for my existing system. The ssd has windows 7 on it, so how do I go about putting them into the new system? I don't really want to install everything again. Can I just plug in and update the drivers or do I have to start again?

If you have data/documents in you old drive, you can use them with no problem.

But you probably will run into a lot of problem because most of the programs/applications in the past decade integrate into the registry key of the installed machine. Unless your newly build machine is almost exactly like the old one (hardware wise), and you can boot up, without problem, with the old drive, most of those programs/applications will not run.

it won't work, if you just install the hard drive with OS to a new computer with dissimilar hardware. I know of a free software ,aomei backupper standard, which can do exactly that. 1,You can backup the ssd to an external hard drive and create a bootable media.
2.install the ssd to your new computer, and boot the new computer with the bootable media.
3. restore the backup to the ssd with universal restore checked. more infomation: http://www.backup-utility.com/features/dissimilar-hardware-restore.html

If the motherboard manufacturer is the same you could use sysprep on the hard drive that you want in the new computer. Read as much as you can on sysprep.

Yep, fresh install it is, and a just isntall your programs when you need to. Make a list on google drive that you can use to help remind you what programs you have isntalled, but i always find that just isntall when you need is best, policy. you will see that you don't use 60% of them.

Seeing aomei backup here reminds me of free easus todo backup, which two share pretty much the same features. A better way comes up to me is to clone the old drive to the new SSD along with all the files and applications. I remember it is quite simple. OK. Googled this tutorial.

I have wondered if there IS a way to just switch the hard drive with OS to another computer with dissimilar hardware. I have googled this for days. Man, you can not believe what I have found. See for yourself https://www.gcsdstaff.org/roodhouse/?p=867 PS: the man who wrote this must be a freaking genius

Yeah, I've had to disable intelppm a few times but thats not the main issue. The issue is when you have totally different hardware and an OEM license.
