can i track someone sending abusive messages

Hi, my girlfriend's sister has been getting abusive messages from a fake facebook profile for a long time saying her disabled son should have been strangled at birth and saying they are glad her uncle just died amongst other things which is disgusting. You could report them to facebook but all they do is make another profile, is there anyway to trace who they are?
 
If you feel its abusive enough, a call to the local police might be helpful, since it seems like it is someone your girlfriend's sister knows.

But yeah, make sure all her settings are on private, make it so no one can find her, and of course, block the fake profiles sending the messages.
 
Set Outlook to recieve Facebook messages.Once she recieves an abuse message,take a look at the message headers.They provide a LOT of useful informations that can be used to track anyone down.
So just copy all those headers into let's say NOTEPAD,save that as a simple text file and send it to me on the following E-mail address:

[email protected]

After that I am going to send that file to the police and tell them to try track that down.If her sister in her town already has the police who is doing this things then tell her to send that text file to them.If not,you send it to me and I will forward it to the police.

This is not the first case of something like this happening.There was one case where many people on facebook were psychicaly torturing one girl and they were doing that so much ALL THE TIME for a long time that at the end poor girl couldn't take that anymore and she killed her self.

There are many crazy people on facebook who are dangerous and they should be tracked down as soon as possible.So tell your sister to do what I told you as soon as possible.If she has a police in her town who does these things then let her know to do what I told you and that she sends that file to them.If not then send it to me on the E-mail address I gave you above and I will forward it to them.
 
thanks everyone for the replies, sorry I was late to reply, not been on for a while been mega busy, I have been trying to get her to go to the police but that's easier said than done, the messages seemed to have stopped for a while now but this happened before and started again, the thing that has baffled me is she has done as a couple of you have suggested above and changed her privacy settings, I made another account to see if I could send a message and it wouldn't let me so this surely means the culprit is on her friends list doesn't it? starting to think they are sending the message and then deactivating the account but not sure
 
I do agree with changing the password. There are so many usernames and passwords in a persons daily life. The typical User will attempt to use the same password for every login account. If she is being targeted by a spammer, I would be safe and change the password to a non-generic password only for that account. Unaware of the spammers capabilities I would not risk them obtaining public information and other methods to determine a users password based on past history and a users lifestyle.
