Can I transform my computer to an access point?

Can I transform my computer into an access point? My computer is connected to router (which far away from home) by cable, and I want to have strong signal in my house so that I can use the network on other devices. I'm wondering if I can do that by connecting wireless adapter to a computer and make it somehow share the existing network across it's covering area, or maybe some other solution. Please help! :)

how exactly are you connected to this far away router?

you could do the wireless adapter, it would essentially turn your pc into a router. my guess is your network would be slow.

what i would do is hook up a switch or hub on that line instead. some wireless routers can be configured as access points.

It's connected by ethernet cable to the router. I want to make my computer a router using wireless adapter which will use the existing ethernet connection.

It can be done, but I'd also recommend just plunking down $50 for a decent wireless router.

With that, you could have a firewall, portability (you can place the router anywhere in relation to the modem, as long as you are connected via hardline) and free your computer for more important jobs.

But, it's not possible for me to move the router where I want to. So, it's about 100m from home and fixed. I want to turn my computer into an access point so that I can use wireless connection at home on other devices except computer which is connected by ethernet cable to the router.

You have a 100m cable from the modem to your computer?

At any rate, instead of plugging that cable into your computer, you could plug it into a wireless router and run a much shorter cable to your computer.

This would free computer resources (by letting the new wifi router handle traffic to wireless devices) and give you some added capability (depending on the router you choose, a dedicated firewall which allows you to shut off Windows Firewall and freeing more resources, maybe some content filtering or basic AV, and an extra RJ-45 port for anything else you want to network via hardline).

Merely a recommendation, mind; you will do whatever you want, and a couple queries through a search engine will net you the information you need.

I bought Asus N10 Wireless USB Adapter, but whenever I try to install a driver, the computer restarts and can't boot up until I choose an option to use my last known good configuration.

OK, i need help. I installed Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit SP1 and as I said, bought Asus N10 Wireless USB Adapter. I installed Connectify and set it up to share my Local Area Connection. But whenever I try to connect my Nokia X6 to the network, it disconnects automatically after 5 seconds. What can I do, please help!
