Can I uninstall Service Pack 2?

Yes; Look in Add/Remove programs and you should see it listed there.
But I would want to know why you want to uninstall it:confused: ...Windows XP is MUCH safer with it installed.

SP2 is mandated along with SP4 on 2000 by most new games and apps alike. If the installation disk was an earlier release with or without SP1 the fact that SP2 went on without a hitch is one good reason to keep it on. For removal you would go into the add/remove programs as mentioned before and put a check mark on the "show Windows updates" box.

With SP2 included on the installation disk the list of SP2 items are about two small items there. Those are about 2mb in size compared to the full 266mb of the service pack. Here I'm waiting to see if they do release an SP3 for XP soon after the 1/30/2007 deadline for Vista.

The first question stands as to why anyone would want it removed unless it was known for sure to interfere with some type of older programs(s).

If the OS is built with SP2, then you cant uninstall it. But if you installed it after you installed XP, you can.

he may want to try penetration testing on a standard, unpatched xp system.

why try to hack windows? It is pointless and easy. Not to mention with out SP2 there are like 100s of known viruses, spyware, and malware, etc that exploit known security loop holes in SP1 and earlier. You are basically opening a can of whoop ass on yourself by uninstalling it.

every time i try to install SP2, i have to reinstall windows to get my computer to boot.... so SP1 is serving me for all my needs and with my firewall, not a damn virus on it. Games don't NEED SP2, they just put SP2 there because that is the only "supported" one by M$ right now.

Gee? My first XP Home installation disk was stuck with SP1 and I was still able to install SP2 without problems when first released in 2004! The type of things that would hamper that along with any other updates are firewalls, antivirus, antispyware programs running at the time.

One method to get it on and avoid the prompt to install it now when going for updates is to download the full 266mb redistribution version and install it when you have the rest disabled temporarily. http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/OS-Enhancements/Windows-XP-SP2-RTM.shtml

there are tons of viruses out there that exploit SP1, like the sasser for one. The problem is, you don't have a stable version of windows isntalled if that happens everytime or you have shoddy support for your internal hardware. I have never had many problems installing SP2, and when I did, I formatted and reinstalled and problem solved.

I have an original OEM Win XP Pro disc I got before it was released from the M$ road show, and I can install it fresh and run system update and install it to the most current updates. Of course it takes like 2 hours to do so.

well, almost every system file i have is modified to fit my needs/wants so i figure that is the reason...
I'm sure its FlyaKiteOSX that is interfering now but i tried SP2 before that and it didnt go too well. Ill uninstall FaK someday and try SP2 but i doubt itll make that big a diff...
SP1 hasnt given me any problems thus so far if it ain't broke, I won't fix it (until i get a new comp and this become my testbed for all my crazy experiments *cue evil laugh*)

what exactly are you accomplishing my editing system level config files? I am plainly curious at this point.

have you ever tried FlyaKiteOSX? its really amazing, above and beyond any skinning program you can think of, only drawback is that is modifes your system files (after making a backup of course)

Nope, sounds kind of fishy to me. If I want intuitive desktop UI I'll use my mac or my linux box. I mean there are 1000s of KDE and Gnome themes out there.

Is that flyakite software an app that gives your desktop a powerful openGL windows and 3D effects? I have dabbled with a few of those on Linux but not on windows.

but hey whatever floats your boat, I would be just too skeptical if an application needed to modify system files, and pretty sure I wouldn't trust it.

you guys are too paranoid, i strive to find everything that can break my comp, then i get to fix it, thus improving my knowledge of various computer problems (though surprisingly, i have VERY few problems with my comp)!! I've used FaK for 2 years and no problem, its a very stable program and since it uses your system files, it uses no more resources than XP itself.

yes it opens a fullscreen window but I think its a neat way to make a site and easily closed with alt-F4.

I don't have to try to break my own system, I support 35,000+ users who do that for me on a daily basis.

My personal systems run solid b/c i don't mess with them. I have a few destkops at work which are used for testing and those get thrashed with stuff all the time for testing.

I don't do tech support so I have to find ways to expand my knowledge about fixing computers. I may have phrased that wrong but i dont try to break my comp, I like finding things that break it so I can fix it. I'm in High School right now and don't have too many people (besides family and friends) rushing to me to fix their comps, and since the comps in both computer labs at school run quite stable, being system admin really isn't too hard...
