Can I upgrade my RAM?

Hey
I've got a Dell thats a few years old and i am finding that my audio software is starting to struggle. I've got P4 Intel 3gig dual processors(pretty certain anyway) and 2 * 512 NECC DDR 400MHZ SDRAM cards. I opened my box to check if i had space to chuck in another 2 512 cards but i only have 2 expansion slots which are taken by my 2 current 512's. I basically just want to know what is the maximum amount of RAM i can run and what i should buy. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers
Jared

Just to let you know, your P4 is not a dual core, it's a single core but has hyper-threading, which appears as two cores to Windows.

Anyways, since we dont know the model of your computer we cant say for certain how much RAM it can support, but i'd say it's a pretty safe bet you can buy 2x 1GB DDR400 sticks and it will work. But as I said, if you tell us the model we can find the specs and make sure.

Ok that makes sense then. Cheers. Its a dimension 3000. It was basically the base model but i made sure processor ram etc were upgraded. worked out cheaper than buyin the higher model. Cheers for your help

It seems that you can buy a 1GB stick for that specific model so if it supports a 1GB stick then it will support one in each slot, so you can have up to 2GB I think

Or would it be wiser to stick with NECC even though they seem to not be as easy to find? Just went to Crucial.com and they suggested a 2gig upgrade based on scanning my system. Anyone bought parts from them before?

depends how much you want to spend on it, kingston are pretty good for value and performance, or you could go for corsair value select which are pretty good too. there's a fair choice but that is the right sort for your computer anyway

Yeh If you want things that are guaranteed to work then don't buy them from ebay, even if it says they're new, you get alot better warranty from a shop than a random person.

Thanks heaps guys. I've found an online store thats charging a very reasonable price. One last question, i'm not very informed with memory as you may have noticed, but out of Kingston and Corsair would i be wise to go with Kingston? Or is it one of those intel v amd type situations where both perform but is a matter of choice? Thanks again.

Corsair used to be known as the best, I think they still are. Some of their memory is very expensive. I you can afford it then go for corsair, in my opinion.
