Can I use Windows 7 upgrade on non-legitimate copy of windows?

Hey,

So the computer I bought a while ago wound up having a pirated copy of Windows Vista on it. I was a little pissed when I found out, but it had already been a year, and it was working fine. However, I'd like to buy the Windows 7 upgrade version. Will it let me upgrade this fake copy of Vista? Or do I need an install with a real Vista key in order to successfully upgrade to Windows 7? (Note, I'd be doing a fresh install)

Thanks, and happy holidays

You should just be able to do a fresh install with your upgrade dvd, choose custom install I believe.

NO........better to not discuss here. its frowned on.

You can do a fresh install from an upgrade dvd. Doesn't matter whether vista is legal or not. Do a search on it, the idea here is to get him a genuine copy of windows and he can do this by doing a fresh install using the upgrade dvd.

Ok.......i was confused and figured the upgrade was that. Had to be legislate. New it would work. but i was not going to say it.

Merry Christmas...........cheers.

Thanks for the responses guys!

Yeah, I'm not asking for help on pirating windows. Unfortunately, the computer I bought came with a fake copy and I'm trying to get a legitimate one!
