Can Intel Core 2 support 8 cores?

In Chessbase, it's written that Shredder (Shredder is a chess program) used 8 x 3.16Ghz Intel Core 2. But how is it possible if Intel Core 2 supports only up to 4 cores?

yeah i run that on my server at school... its standerd. you can get 4, quad processors sometimes

I guess it was essentially a dual-socket workstation platform outfitted with a pair of quad-core Xeon processors for a total of eight cores.
