can mp4 files be watched on a normal DVD player?

Tuesday night I purchased some videos for downloading for preparing for the CompTIA A+ exam. They're in .mp4 file format. Can I burn these to a Dual Layer DVD and watch them on a regular home DVD player (non-PC)??

Reason I ask is I've been having some lower-back pain lately from an injury and sitting at the computer watching video after video eventually gets pretty painful. If I can watch them on my home DVD player hooked up to my TV, I can lay down and just watch without the back trouble.

Thanks for any feedback!

You know, I guess it would really depend on the player, I'm sure some can, but to my knowledge the majority of players only do mpeg2.

Another option is to use software like AVIDemux and convert using the following settings:

Video: MPEG-4 ASP (Xvid)
-Constant bitrate: 1500kbps (might work with higher bitrate)
-otherwise default, just make sure "Quarter Pixel Motion Estimation" and "Global Motion Compensation" are NOT checked

Audio: AC3, MP3 or MP2

Format: AVI
-Split every: 1900MB (just make sure the AVI files are smaller than 2GB)

If the encoded AVI is larger than 2GB, you can just open that file, copy the video/audio and set it to split every x MB.
