Can my dad's P3 be overclocked?

most dells and bought computers wont let you overclock. you could however flash the bios, but it sounds like an upgrade would do you better than any reasonable overclock with that proc :)

I'd like to stick a 1gb stick of pc3200 ram into it (i'm not sure it this would work), overclock his gf4 mx420, and overclock his processor. This would make a gamable system, no?

-Is this ram compatible?
-How much can I overclock the mx420?
-How much can I overclock the processor? 1Ghz?

well im sure hte ram is compatible, but even with some overclocking. that computer wuld have a very very very hard time playing any current games.

The processor is most likely overclocable; now whether you can use the Dell motherboard to OC it or not is questionable (and highly unlikely).

OC 101

You're not overclocking any P3 by 1GHz.

i think he meant to 1ghz, not an extra 1ghz:)
regarding the gig of pc3200, i have not seen any p3 mobos that can take anything other than pc133 or pc100. also, pretty sure they do mot make pc133 in bigger than 512mb modules.

It will be gameable for games made before... 2000 :P

You can overclock your video card, not that it will make much of a difference. And if you can find a good windows based OC utility, you may be able to oc it 100-200Mhz.

I didnt meant that literally, in fact UT2004 only need a PIII 1Ghz to play.

my point was that its not giong to be that nice of a gaming machine if you want to play any of the newer games at acceptable settings and framerates.

for $300? You could get a new Mobo, processor, and 1gb of ram for $300. Can your mobo actually support 1gb? My PIII could only support 512mb.

Yeah, I've never actually seen a P3 board that supported a single gig of ram in one dimm. Maybe the 1st P4 boards? I still kinda like the old 184-pin SDRAM. lol

icemaker.....Do you play BF2? Wher eyou just online? Was some guy Tking you alot....becuse I TKed an "icemaker" 10 times...untill i was kicked.

I still have a dell mobo (upgrading soon) and overclocking is near impossible, if not totally. It is possible that I have a different BIOS, but I'm not sure. Dells suck.

I actually wouldn't mind having a system with a couple of those sticks of ram.

1. Note the fact that this is registered memory. It's really designed for use in servers, not ordinary PCs, hence the price and capacity.
2. It's highly unlikely that the PC in question would support 1GB in a single stick
3. Even if it did, at $300, it's cheaper to buy a whole new PC!
