Can not create a shortcut

All my shortcuts on my desktop for the Internet no longer work and when I try and create a shortcut for the desktop I get a message saying "unable to open his internet site. The protocol "https" does not have a registered program" I had Google Chrome on my computer for about a month and I Do Not like it so I removed it, but I don't know if that had anything to do with this?
I'm using Windows 7 and IE 11

You likely need to set another browser as your default

I don't want to use another browser and that is why I'm posting. How can I put in an attachment?

I got it fixed by going into the control panel under default programs and by clicking on set your default programs, clicked on Internet Explorer, choose defaults for this program and click the 3 at the bottom and that did the trick.
