Can only connect thru an ethernet switch

Hi, I am using an HP desktop, win 7 pro 64 bit in my office. My office has a wired gigabit LAN (along with wireless access). I was trying to plug in a cat 5e cable to the wall jack and to my desktop; but it did not show any connection. (error msg would say to connect an ethernet wire). No IP address, no ping.

Then, I decided to go thru a gigabit switch. So, I hooked up a D-Link Gigabit switch to the wall jack, and from the switch I hooked up a cat5e to my desktop.. and viola...!! It works..

But, can any one help me understand why it should behave like this..???

Thanks..

Maybe you just had a loose connection. Cause as long as there is router or switch on the other end of that wall jack then it should have worked.

I think he use the wrong wire that is why he can connect to the network with a swith, because the swith reverse the wiring.
