Can someone give me a quick ELI5 on "speakerphone" ?

Asking this on Reddit yielded me no answers.

Anyways, I've noticed that on a lot of phones, the speaker and the microphone are right next to each other. If I put someone on speakerphone, wouldn't them talking be picked up by my mic and be looped right back to them from my end, like a talkback on a CB radio? Is there something that isolates the mic and speaker?

That's why you can't talk when someone is already speaking when they are on speakerphone. The mic gets muted until there is a break in the speaking, then you can start talking.

I'd say it's more likely just intelligent noise cancellation, where it know the audio coming out of the speaker and disregards that on the mic. I've had many speaker phone calls where I can interrupt someone when speaking.

Pretty much any speakerphone call..

I did read some posts from people with certain phones that they sounded muted when on speakerphone, but most of those were isolated to a certain OS release on a certain phone, certainly not standard on smartphones. I've never had a problem with it on our house phone either.
