0h ok i see how it works now sorry, i just thought people could give me their view of what makes a good computer and then it would give me an idea what to get.

ok well i want just an average computer up to £1000 which is around $1,812.18.

At the moment i do everything off my laptop but its beginning to die on me so i decided to get a list of components to get a good computer, so what i do with my computer at the moment is download movies, trailers and music using my 1mbps broadband so storage would be an issue id like alot of storage, i do play games on the computer but not alot of the time so it would be nice to play games with a the quality images etc. but it doesnt have to be top of the range.

so i dont know if that gives you a basic idea but hopefully it helps you help me. oh and if i had say three dvd rw drives in it would i be able to record onto three dvds at the same time say if i was storing three films and wanted to do it at the same time or is that not possible??

i was told that if i got a smaller more compact tower then its spec becomes not as good is that true??

ok well i hope you can help me if you cant no worries

p.s i aint building im just gettin the components and then gettin someone to build it im very busy so i cant fit it around pleasing the girlfriend, looking after the child and working to support us all so hopefully you dont look down on me for not building it myself ;)

if all you want is an average computer, then you shouldnt have to spend more than $900USD. This is what i think you should get if all you want to do is some gaming:

Pentium 4 w/ht @ 3.0Ghz --or-- AMD Athlon 64 3200+
Im not that good at motherboards, so someone else can tell you what MoBo to buy
ATI X600 --or-- nVidia 6600GT (256MB would be nice for either one)
pretty much any case you want
CD Burner --or-- DVD burner
At least a Sound Blaster Live! card, Audigy would be better though.
Around 1GB-2GB of PC3200 Ram
at least an 80G hard drive

other people can fill in what i left out, but all that should only costs you between $900-$1000 USD

Hey well i dont mean the computer to be average as in crappy, i mean i want it to do more than just one thing so i dont just want it for gaming or downloadin or doing work etc i want it to do everything

thats a good start tho thanks geoff does anyone know about my dvd rw question?? if i had three all in a computer would i be able to record three different films on to three discs at the same time or would i still only be able to record one film on one disc at a time???

do u want it for gaming tho? if u want good gaming then go for amd, u could also get a dual core processor if u wanted to for vry good multitasking, u can get the X2 4400 for around $550

well yeah i want it for gaming but due to responsibilities i dont do loads of gaming just every now and then when i a real good game comes out, whats this duel core processor?? what does it do?? sounds very intriguing

Cyberpower systems. If not build your own. The AMD X2 4400+ is a good choice. If you want a complete list of parts, and advice on changing to meets your specs, just say so.

the dual core processors is pretty much 2 processors combined into 1, vry good for multitasking, its also better than intels dual cores

its also vry good for gaming, not as good as the fx55 but pretty close

u could also afford a 6800gt or 6800ultra if u wna go the nvidia route

for what u said in ur 1st post
-a smaller case means less cooling and less expandability, i would get a large one with
lots of fans in it for good cooling
-i wouldnt want to burn 3 things at a time, it would skip alot in what ur burning, also u
would need 3 different programs(i think) to do it all at once

i have 2 dvd burners and i burn two things at the same time all time:) and i never burned one that skiped, but somtimes like 1 out of 20, i get a burn error, and yes you do have to have multi programs, i use roxio and nero , but if you want to burn a cd and a dvd you can just use one program

those dual processors sound pretty handy, ill look into that i can buy them rite?? not just something i gotta make myself?

so best gettin a big case with lots of fans, wouldnt lots of fans make a lot of noise? one fan makes enuff noise as it is??

its good to know i can get two drives with little problems

cheers so can anyone suggest decent makes and models of things such as hard drives, dvd writers (prefer dual layer), processors and casing

I just built a budget system for my buddy($685 total)... we got a good deal on a used 19" envision LCD for $150

got a Chaintech NF3 board($59) with a 2800+ athlon 64 cpu($105 shipped from enet.com with hs/fan), 1GB(2x512) corsair value select($80), ati 9600SE($54), 120GB Samsung harddrive($70), pci 802.11g card($30 from JustDeals.com), wireless keyboard/mouse($20 from JustDeals.com), NEC dvd burner($49) and and a real cheap case/PS($33) and it isn't anything spectacular but for the price it does the trick for him.. he mainly just listens to music and watches porn anyway.. not really a gamer so no need for a good video card or the top of the line ram or anything.. That there is final cost for tower, kb/mouse/LCD monitor.. if you reuse any parts u have more you can save even more, or just take that saved $ and put it towards a better Vid. card or 939 a64 instead of the 754 one... All items I didn't mention where I got them from.. I got them all from newegg.com and shipping was around $33 or so... it came to 535 shipped for all the new parts minus the used LCD... -30 for the wireless card which you probably don't need, and another $20 if you re-use kb/mouse, it'll only run you another $50 or so and you can get a 6600GT and make it a "decent" gamer

ati x600 --or -- nvidia 6600gt (256mb would be nice for either one)
those are two totally different classes of videocards: the former is a business type card and the latter, a gaming card

this duel core processor?? what does it do?? sounds very intriguing
CPU 101.

its also vry good for gaming, not as good as the fx55 but pretty close
Thats only true for singlethreaded games

i have 2 dvd burners and i burn two things at the same time all time and i never burned one that skiped, but somtimes like 1 out of 20
Yes but you prolly get a load of P0/P1 errors (for DVDs) and/or C1/C2 errors (for CDs) ...

and a real cheap case/PS($33)
Make sure its a cheap case and not a cheap PSU :)
