Can someone help me understand the differences between the E6850 and the E8400

Hi! newegg is out of the E8400 but they have the E6850. Both run at 3.0Ghz and have a 1333Mhz FSB. The two differences I can tell is that the 8400 has a 6GB L2 cache compared to 4GB on the 6850. Also the 8400 has a 45nm manufacturing tech. What exactly is that and will going with a 65mn hinder the performance. I am probably going to end up buying the E6850 because I don't feel like waiting, just want to know the difference between the two. Thanks!

You've stated the differences, except the cache is measured in megabytes, not gigabytes. The 45nm process is better for CPU overclocking as the chip runs cooler. If you don't plan to OC, I guess the E6850 would be OK. Personally, I'd have a problem with paying $269 for a last generation chip, but that's up to you. :)
 
Oh sorry about swapping the MB for the GB, I get this confused a lot, still learning. Will there be a noticeable difference between the 6 and 4 gigabyte? I don't know much about overclocking so I think the 65nm version might work for me. I would normally buy the E8400 but I can't find it and the specs on the E6850 look so similar and it's readily available. Overclocking aside is the performance similiar between the two out of the box? Thanks.

No. You will notice a difference between the two chip even not OCed. The 45nm chips process a little faster, and the cache size is always a positive, especially in certain applications and games. If I was you, I'd wait for the E8400's to come back down in price and availability, you will be sorry if you don't!

If you want a chip now, get one of the cheaper core 2 duo's (E2180) and sell it on eBay after you get an E8400.
