Can someone help me with Critical Errors?

For the past three weeks I've been getting a crtical error, I assume the screen goes blue and restarts, and now it seems to be happening quite frequently and is starting to get annoying. My computer is Home made and if anyone needs the specs let me know and I can gather them and post them for you. This is becoming an annoying problem and I'd like to get it fixed.

The first thing to do when seeing any BSOD(blue screen of death) is to take notes on any information seen. That will usually point out a driver or system file as the cause.

As far as system specifications that could help if the problem is device driver related like a driver for either video or sound card. Other addons like tv tuner cards and usb devices seeing software/driver items automatically starting up along with Windows can also see problems at times.

Is there anyway for me to stop the BSOD so that I can review what it says? Everytime the blue screen flashes and then my computer restarts.

The links there show how to go about disabling the automatic system restart by simply unchecking the item in the Control Panel>System>Advanced Settings for both XP and Vista.

Sometimes you can simply press the pause key while the system is starting to halt everything briefly if you are fast enough. But the disabled auto restart will insure the screen remains for taking notes. Pay close attention to any driver file listed however.

Every once in awhile you'll see a bad install where one or more drivers will try to access memory addresses Windows has reserved for background services or something else leading to this type of error.

This particular error is seen most often with sound cards/onboard sound and even addons like tuner/video capture cards in XP and other older versions of Windows. Just look at the numerous links with a quick search on this one problem. http://un.yhs.search.yahoo.com/avg/search?fr=yhs-avg&p=DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

Now you will have to start looking at any manual video or sound updates recently put on or a need to remove the present for a clean install of a fresh driver set in order to see this cleared up. SP3 for XP supposedly helps debug these problems having over 1,000 fixes included.
