Hi,

my brother has got a laptop for Christmas and I'm trying to set up a wireless router so that he can have use of internet is his bedroom.

The main modem and internet connection is in my room.

It's a Belkin router and I have connected it into my modem as shown and can get online as usual on my desktop PC.

when it comes to being able to get online from the lap top I am completely lost and fustrated. I've been sitting at it for 4 hours and have no clue whatsoever how I can get it working.

The laptop is a Dell inspiron 440m.

It will be disapointed if I can get it working for Christmas so if someone could please help me I'd appreciate it. Thank you.

Two things..

Do you have a wifi card built-in/.installed?

and

What is the Dell Inspiron Model #?...I'm thinking the 440M is referring to the Celeron mobile chip inside and not the actually system model number..

thanks for replying

I'm not sure if I have a wi-fi card built in to be honest. How can I find out?

I dont have the box in front of me, on the bottom it says model Dell PP19L.

PP19L. is actually the battery p/n.

Is there any sticker on the underside..should have a dell sticker with s/n and model #

im sorry, i cant find that. Its second hand you see.

Though at the top of the keyboard theres a little light lit up that says "wifi" i dont know if it means I have it or I dont.

Sorry I'm not able to give a lot of information but i appreciate your help

No prob..

chances are it has wifi if theres an indicator light.

Look around the chassis on the machine and make sure there is a wifi switch and that it is in the 'on' position.

Next, I'm guessing it's windows xp?

In your task bar at the bottom right should be an icon for wireless networks, and assuming your wifi network is on--you should be able to locate your connection in the list.

I see the icon you are talking about though when i click to refresh next work list it shows nothing. It says windows cant configure thios connection. if you have enabled another programe to manage the wireless conection use that software. if you want windows to configure it, start the wireless zero configureation?

In the same window that has 'refresh network list' go down to bottom and click 'change advanced settings'.

click on the second tab at the top of that window that says 'wireless networks' and on that menu check the box that says 'use windows to configure network settings' and then 'view wireless networks'..

hopefully then you can see the list of availble networks.
