Can someone please tell me how to get a “snapshot” of my computer screen?

Do I need some kind of software, or is there a free program I can download from the internet? Would that be something I can already do with Windows XP, and if so, how do I do it?

Just use Snipping Tool which is included with Windows.

Go to Start -> Run (or press the Windows Key and the R key at the same time), type 'snippingtool.exe' into the box, hit enter and voila. :) Press 'New', drag your mouse over the area of the screen which you want to capture and then save it.

Note, it's only available in Vista, 7 and 8. It's not in XP or older.

Alternatively, you can press the Print Screen (Prt Scrn) button on your keyboard, open up Microsoft Paint, press Ctrl+V and then save the image and that will save a screenshot of the whole screen. You can do that on any version of Windows. You could also paste the image into something like Microsoft Word or PowerPoint if you wanted.

No need to download any programs to do it for you!

Pressing "Print Screen", or "Prnt Scrn", (or variations thereof) will capture what's on all of your displays.

Pressing Alt + Print Screen will capture the currently active window.

At that point you can then paste the results into something like microsoft paint, GIMP, etc.
