Can the i5 2500k processor handle games like BF3 on ultra settings? Assuming i'm using a 7970or 590gtx card?

Yes. Even more so if you overclock it.

Yep, paying 100 more for the 2600k only gets you maybe a few (like 5 or less i'd guess), and a couple seconds off the load time. A 2500k with a 7970 will easily play any game out for the next few years, i mean it kills the Phenom II's and they play any game fine, but they do get less fps, on a bench comparison of the 980 and a 2500k, a Starcraft 2 bench with ultra cpu settings was the only one that was under 60fps (42.5) and the 2500k only got 64.9fps in that, which for it is incredibly low.

upgrading from a 980X won't net you much performance gain.
as seen here
If I were you, and it was my money to spend, I'd wait until Ivy Bridge -E to see some real benefit. A few FPS isn't going to matter with a 7970 pushing pixels behind it.

hey guys,

I wasn't upgrading my 980x. I was upgrading my work computer which was an old athlon dual core. I thought about waiting for ivy bridge, but i dont need top of the line for my work computer. just something that will run diablo 3 when it comes out XD. its using the gtx 460 which i hope will be able to handle D3.

I am currently getting a huge range on my temps. from idle @ 33C to prime 95 70+C. I need to upgrade from the weak stock cooler.

So you have your 2500K now right? I've got the 2500K with an Arctic Cooling Freezer 13 and I have overclocked the 2500K to 4.5GHz. On idle it underclocks itself to around 1.6GHz and sits at around 30C with a voltage of 1.35V, and when encoding video it overclocks to around 4.3GHz and at 80% load is at 45-50C. Temperature never really goes beyond 50C, certainly not beyond 55C. Yes, definitely get aftermarket cooling. At the stock 3.3GHz with the Freezer 13 the temps were around 25C.

yup it sure is. i bought a new case the corsair 500r and the corsair h100 for cooling :) that should solve the problems
