I have only just started to expand my computer knowledge lately and I have never had a look at anything besides windows.
so,
I want to have a play with a linux os, but I want to keep my main computer windows.

I have an old compaq persario so I thought I might use it, but to be honest I don't know the specs

here is what I do know:

  • windows ME
  • 120mb Ram
  • intergrated graphics
  • 20GB HDD

so would this machine be able to cope with linux and if so what version?

any computer can run windows, just like any computer can run linux. but, i would recommend Xubuntu (32-bit), it is from the makers of Ubuntu (which is based on Dabian linux).

There are a lot of Linux distro's to look at:

Debian
Fedora Core (sponsored by RedHat which is another Linux Distro)
SuSe
Ubuntu
Gentoo
Mandriva

I've heard Ubuntu is very user friendly, and SuSe is very easy to use. The first Linux based OS I used on my computer was SuSe 9.3 Pro. Very easy to use and maintain. The update system is simple. Gentoo is more advanced and takes up a lot of space.

i would use Xubuntu, from whati have heard it is basically Ubuntu but designed for older machines such as yours, i would definately give that a try, as it probably has the easy to use features of Ubuntu aswell
