Can two laptop use wireless adapter to connect to each other without router/ac point?

Hi all.
Can two laptops connect to each other use the internal wireless adapter to do files transfer without router or access point? if is possible, does them need third party software or windows can do itself? I have one laptop use windows xp professional sp2, one use windows xp home edition sp3. and one use windows 7 ultimate 32 bits. please help.

Just curious though, how come ethernet crosslink cable can transfere file between two computer and the wireless adapters can't? like point to point link?

OK, I guess i was wrong. I've been researching this and I guess it can be done providing both wireless cards have the feature for peer to peer(adhoc) network. Or I guess there is software that can do it too.
