Could someone tell me if someone sends you an email and there is a semi pornographic picture in it, can this give you a virus. The picture was not an attachment, (with the paper clip that I had to open), the picture was already in the message body fully displayed.
I have heard that viruses cannot be transmitted like this for at least another 4 years, but it makes me wonder how I got my viruses.
Any help, advice or opinions welcome!

well, its hard to tell. SEe, they made an email, call a 'beauteful life'. If you jsut opened it, a special tihng happen. your computer's memory gets empty, everything lost, they get acess to your email and password. So if this can be done, i think it can be send with viruses yet.

but, the new HOTMAIL beta (not MSN), is for test. i have it, you can't delte an email unless you click on it. its a pain! so somehow i doubt if you can get viruse slike that....

listen, you should not open halp-porn pictures, and plusm never open the email of someone you dont kbow or trust.

If you click on an image or link in the email, there is a chance it could download a virus for you. Just be cautious toward anything in the bulk folder (assuming you are using yahoo) and you should be OK.

Some e-mails have filters and what not that does not allow pictures to show unless you specify it to. An example is Gmail.

If it's already open, I doubt that you will get infected, unless it has a link and you click on it or downloaded an Attachment. However, it can still happen. The Love Mail virus that used to go around... I'm not sure how it worked, but it may have worked like how you specified.

If you are paranoid, run an antivirus on your system.

You can get viri many ways. The last time I melted my harddrive and had to reformat (to XP pre SP1/2) I got blaster within 1 second of internet connectivity.

Any way, shape or means. Nothing sacret with the Internet. The few that I had, it was easier to get rid off than try to figure out how I got infected .

right.
trying to figur eit out is hard.

Sometime virues will form form complication of codes. sometime, people send them.
They say if your site is a http/, well its virus free. But never know.

I always though you could only get a virus if you actually opened anything. I assume it's safe to open an email, but not to click any suspicious links within the email.

That's unlucky man. It took 8 seconds at least for me....

I think the best course of action is just not to open anything that doesn't ring a bell for you, most people know the people who are sending them legit emails - almost everything else is bound to be spam and/or dangerous.

well, people are getting bored nowdays, so they fool around, and create a virus, and somehow pwoplw catch them. Perhaps in Cookies? Well, antivirus are ther for help.

Yuep, basicly a pride thing, what idiots, they cause me a lot of trouble...

But yes, it is very possible to get email viruses. Basicly, just disable images in your email account, and don't open any mail that you dont know. Hell, dont even open mail that isnt important(as in, myspace, etc.) because it might not be them... O and if you get an email from a friend with an attachment, give them a call to see if they actually sent the email.
