Can Windows go Open Source?

What I was wanting to know is the older Windows that M$ no longer support like I heard they recently stopped supporting Windows 2000 so could a third party company pick it up and continue to developed the OS and distribute it for free? If not is there any of the older Windows OS that it could happen too?

I was just curious cause I don't know when they "stop supporting it" if they still own the product or what.

Theoretically, it would be classified as abandonware, but in reality, Microsoft maintains a tight grip on the rights to all of their deprecated operating systems.

Windows open source? lol, never. If any of there operating systems got leaked, linux developers would be all over it. Netflix would have full support, and running programs under wine would be a thing of the past, everything would run natively, or close to it. A wine like visualization program might still be needed, but it would work pretty effectively, unlike the way it is now.

So no, I never see that happening ever. The only way we'll see source is if it's leaked.

Not a fan of Windows but if 2000 got released to the right open source community it would take windows 2000 to a new level, something secure, powerful and new hardware support.

I highly doubt Windows will ever become opensource. :P

Too much money been made,

At looks like it is still in the alpha stage but might be worth a look.

I gave ReactOS a try on the family Laptop and its quite good,Really fast boot time and just like it says you can install windows Apps,The downfall for me though and why i could not continue to use React was that Wireless drivers would not work.

I'm probably going to give it a go when Direct X is stable or at least mostly stable. It would be nice to have an open gaming platform.

Yeah, I've played around with reactOS before, i still have my VM of it setup. I remember seeing something about the window manager was essentially a hacked up version of X from linux, so if someone knew there stuff, hacking/reworking it back would be relatively easy, and from there you could probably compile and build any of the window managers from linux to use. (which would be awesome).
Just imagine, windows with a gnome or even openbox WM. :D

Yes, I plan on doing this when they get to a later stage in the project :P
