Can you build a laptop

I pretty much know the answer is no. But my boyfriend was asking and what i told him was "i can probably reconstruct a laptop, but not build one from scratch."
Is this true?
Plus, what is a netbook? Is that like a half built laptop but without all the "dell, hp, acer" stuff added into it? Is it like case, motherboard, processor, and memory?
if so than that's really cool.

Yes you can. A netbook is like a mini cheap laptop. It doesn't have too much power but it more than makes up for it with its cheap price. Girl, whoever is ur boyfriend is one lucky dude!

Well I know I personally can't "build a laptop", but you can do some changes to it. The ram and network card is easily accessible. You can also change the hard drive and cd drive out fairly easy as well. That is about it as far as "reconstructing" a laptop though.

The CPU does come out like a normal computer's would, but if you add a more powerful CPU, it will produce more heat typically and then you'll have a problem because laptops are so enclosed and have heating issues anyways.

Is there anyway I can add cooling features (i'm throwing this out there i'm not even sure what a coolng feature may be), or maybe change out the fan?

I don't really think you can build a laptop. The motherboard isn't as standardized as desktops are so you won't be able to fit a motherboard into a case unless it was specifically manufactured to do so.

Netbooks are basically ultra-portable laptops. They are just meant for the web and things like that. They are basically an over sized PDA. As far as I know, you can only change the RAM in netbooks, but I am sure it differs from netbook to netbook.

You can change the fan, but it won't do much good. Like I said, laptops aren't as standardized as desktops so you will have no way of knowing what fan to put in your laptop that will fit. Not only that, but manufactures make the fans to exact specifications, ie they move "x" amount of air at "x" amount of voltage. The fans don't get a constant voltage from the motherboard because it changes soley on the current temperature. So if you did get a fan that moved more air at 12V, it could use more current and thus move less air at 3v then the stock fan.

Hope this makes sense, lol.

Hm.. alright.
Thanks.
Why are motherboards so different in laptops? I mean laptops aren't that small, and motherboards don't look that big...

It's because laptops don't come in one uniform size. Basically the manufacture makes a motherboard and case that will fit together, and since laptops are getting smaller and sleeker all the time, it is constantly changing.

Hahah, eventually. Just buy a laptop with the processor and video card you want, and then you can add more ram/bigger hdd later.

Well, it depends. OCZ has a line of barebones notebooks that you need to add the cpu, memory, hard drive too... but as far as building a laptop goes the answer is no, i do think that laptops will be standardized sometime in the future, and we will be able to build laptops alongside desktops.
