Can you control your Motherboard?

I got an ASUS board and can't control the CPU fan, with smartfan.

What brand and model do you have, and can you control the fan?
 
Asus probe has some of the greatest tools to control their motherboards. If it's as current as even socket 370, the latest version should support your board.

The Probe II included with the motherboard only reports fan speeds.

I have an older Asus motherboard, which allows 3 pins to control it.

The new Asus has one 4 pin (for CPU) and two 3 pin.
2 pin is for monitoring only, for sure.
I don't know what the 4th pin is for.

Normaly its as followed
2 pin = Just power for fan, one power, one ground.
3 pin = power and monitering, ground, power, monitering.
4 pin = everything, ground, power, monitering, control.

This would normally be dependent on the fan also not the motherboard.

Are you sure your motherboard is made to control fan speeds?

I don't think his mobo/fans support fan speed control. I had to buy a analog/manual speed control link for my cpu fan to control it.

I'm really not sure, but the old Asus board has only 3 pins for CPU and PSU.
Speedfan allows me to control both. I looked at the manual, which says pin 1 is ground, pin 2 is +12v, and pin 3 is rotation.

On the other hand the new Asus board has two 3 pins, which I cannot control at all. I can only control the 4 pin. The problem is that Asus BIOS likes to override my Speedfan, so its a fight for control. Speedfan always looses. :(
