I have a desktop that is connected straight from the wall (etherne) and doesn't have wifi....I also have a wifi capable laptop that I'd like to use while in bed...If I get a wirelss router...can I connect my desktop regularly through a wire to the router and let the laptop use the "wireless" aspect of it...or are wireless routers strictly wireless only

No you can use wireless routers for both, assuming it has RJ45 ports on it but I have never seen a wireless without them.

There are some "portable" wireless routers that don't have the RJ45 connections on the back, but those are because they are slightly bigger than a wallet. Otherwise, wireless routers all have 4 ports for computer in addition to the one port for the internet connection.

so then whats a good wireless router...I dont need a GREAT wireless router...I havea desktop thats gonna be connected...its just that I take my laptop to school and all my notes/schoolwork is on there and I'd like to get on it while in bed (which is not too far from my desktop, maybe 10 feet since I live in a dorm).....and do some surfing/ and online assignments...thanks...my budget is $50

you can get a linksys wrt 54g at your local walmart for under 50 bucks and its a great router never had any direct problems with it. and its got four eithernet ports on the back to use one for the desktop and three for if ya buddies come to hang out or whatever

Get the Linksys WRT54G, simple, inexpensive, just make sure to setup security on it. I use a lot of these for the biz's I work for, I am throwing the same card that slaphappylinksys is.

now when he gets one he will have to set the internet connection type to a static IP right or can he use the dhcp?

Depends on what kind he has, if it's PPPoe he doesn't even have to set it up on his PC. Most of the time, I work with Verizon and they are PPPoe and they include their stupid software, best way around using their software is to buy a router. You should configure that router for PPPoe and just put in your Username and password. I like when Verizon gives out those simple, small modems, they are so easy to work with and you just hook up a router, you are ready to go. That is what I do most of the time when biz's and ppl ask me to hook up their network/internet.
