Can you overclock any brand pc?

Such as Dell or HP, those are the main two that I'm looking at.

I read an article that mentioned that new dells came with software that allowed easy overclocking.

Mostly likely I'll just buy a brand name, as I can get a minimum of 7% off Dells, and my math on what I'd save building my own just doesn't seem that much.

If I can overclock the dell easily, that would give me a little extra reason to go with one.

Short answer, no, for the most part pre-built computers from companies such as Dell, HP, Gateway, etc can't [easily] be overclocked. The exception being some of the XPS or other enthusiast-oriented desktops, or unless it says otherwise.

I think it was an xps 6xx model that was supposed to come with something to allow ocing.

My last dell has been going strong since May of 2003, so I'm a little out of the loop. It still plays games such as Call of Duty 4 at mediumish quality. Now I read that a new processor is on the way, so I might hold off longer. Or jump on a current quad core deal once the new stuff is released.

technically yes, but it's not ideal. you can find a clockgen program for your PLL chip on the motherboard, but you cannot use it to change voltages. if your bios doesn't support frequency changes then i would leave it alone. better to keep it stock than to fry the oem board unless you just have money to throw away.

In a lot of people's opinion, software overclocking isn't up to snuff yet. I wouldn't rely too heavily on that until they make some major improvements.

Why not build your own? You get to cherry pick your parts, spend less money, and you'll come away with a more future proof system with a better case and have fun in the process. I used to always buy OEM, but I will never make that mistake again.

I used to work on my car and do things like modding my electric guitars...compared to either of those things, working on a computer is easy...anyone can do it.

I was going to build my own, but unless I can save more than 200 bucks I'm not sure that it's really worth it.

I'm looking at spending 1200ish, and I guess I just feel like I'll screw something up if I go for it myself. I might try it. My eyes were going to be watching out for Christmas deals, so it sort of depends what I can find at the time.

dont over clock a dell :D I learned that the hard way. I tried to overclock my gx280 with a p4 in it, the motherboard litteraly blew up you could here the BOOM in the case.
