Can you overpower a computer?

Im going to be building myself a new computer soon, but im not sure what kind of case i want to get yet or what power supply. Is there such thing are getting too large of a power supply or does that just allow for upgrading in the future if i decide to go with a better video card or something? Is there a general rule of thumb when deciding on a power supply.

No you cant "overpower" your computer WITH RESPECT TO your power supply wattage rating. The rating there indictaes the MAX amount of power it can supply :) Often people never apporach anything near that :) (except on powerrup)
