Not anymore, they only have to be of the same chipset.
Can I mix and match graphics cards that have different GPUs?
No. For example, an XXXGT cannot be paired with a XXXGTX in an SLI configuration.
I forget the exact forceware. It was quite some time ago. They were first able to do with a 7900GT and a 7950GT, both were G71 gpu's. It's harder to get working correctly. ATi did it right with their Catalyst drivers, and you can easily run a 4870 and a 4850 in crossfire and see impressive improvement.
Yeah, you can't run a 9600GT and a 9800GTX+ together, but you can run a GTX 285 and GTX 275 together... I don't see the point, but it's possible.
Even if so... it would default to the speed of the lower card, just like the 4870/4850 pairing, the 4870 effectively becomes a 4850.
