Can you use an SSD for fast data processing without installing the OS on it?

I don't care about speeding up my computer's boot time. I just want to speed up a time intensive process from a couple of different programs.

Can I leave the OS on the HDD and just install the programs I intend to use on the SSD and do all of the processing on the SSD or is it required that the OS be on the SSD to speed up these programs' processing?

Thanks for any insight!

Sure.

Although you'd notice a much higher benefit from using it as an OS drive too, it's not just about boot time.
