can you use SATA2 HDD on SATA1?

The connectors are the same, but yes, you can use a SATAII drive on a SATA controller.

Yes.

On some motherboards, such as my old 754 motherboard with 1.5GB connectors, it wouldn't detect a SATAII drive, no matter how hard I tried. But on my Media PC, that detects a SATAII HDD on a SATA1 motherboard.

Most Sata 3.0 drives have a jumper to set it at 1.5 to be compatibile with older motherboards.
