Cannot find modem on new vista pc

My friend has bought a Mesh Elite Inspire pc with Vista home. She is still on dial up internet and tried a cd rom for an ISP. That said there was a hardware problem.

I went into the modem settings and it says there is no modem installed. Surely there must be an internal modem on this pc is'nt there? She cannot get connected to the net until the pc recognises a modem.

Any advice would be appreciated.
thank you

There has been many reported problems with PCs running the new Vista and them having issues with hardware either not being recognized or not completely working properly. I would surmise that she just needs to install new drivers for the modem. Although, if this is a new computer, it is quite possible that there is no modem on it, either. A quick fix would be $20 at your local tech store to purchase a new internal modem, although you/she may need to download the updated drivers for Vista. Sorry for the added headache, but a few computer companies are beginning to eliminate modems from their computers...

A friend of mine was looking at an Acer desktop in BB last summer. Almost bought it... until he found there was no modem included. That's just one company right there.
