Cannot format laptop HDD

Hi Guys,

I am having real trouble with a laptop given to me by a friend, It originally had windows vista on it but was encountering lots of issues and as I didn't have a copy of windows at the time I put Debian Linux on it. Now I have a copy of windows but the disc cannot format the HDD as Debian has put it in a format it doesn't understand.

Does anyone know of a solution to this?

Thanks,

Techviking

Delete all the partitions on the drive with the windows disc then try and format it. If all else fails, use GParted to delete the partitions.

You can delete the partitions with the windows disk. If its vista or 7 then it is a little eraser iirc right below the box listing the partitions. If you encounter issues with that, then download killdisk or DBAN and run the DOD 3 pass (autonuke) and that will fix the issue so you can install windows.
