Cannot get routers working

Hey folks. A friend wants me to set up her wireless for her. She has internet through Comcast and a cable modem (not sure of the make and model, but I can get it if necessary).

She obtained an older router from a friend, but for some reason it wouldn't work. I thought it was because it was just old and non-functioning, so I gave her one of my routers that I had lying around (Linksys WRT160N). That's not working properly either. It emits a signal and I can connect to it just fine and it even says I'm connected, but it won't load any websites. I plugged in an ethernet cable from the router to the computer and it works just fine, but it's just the wireless that isn't working properly.

It makes me wonder if it's the cable modem that doesn't like the two routers that I've hooked up to it. I called Comcast and they just said call the router manufacturer (figures).

Any help? Network troubleshooting is my weakness...

Do a hard reset on the one of the routers so it resets all data and try again. Also what security encryption is set up?

Tried the hard reset (holding down the reset button for 30 seconds) and that didn't do a darn thing.

There is also no security encryption implemented (yet).

When you connect wirelessly can you access the routers config pages or other systems on the network?

If you run ipconfig has the dns setup your gateway and what-not correctly (it should look like it did when you connected via ethernet cable)?

I was on a Mac at the time, so I couldn't access that information (that, or I had no idea where to find it). Next time I go over there, I'll bring my laptop along and see what I get.

I have found that for some weird reason going near a router with a mac kills it.

Customer of mine had a netgear router and configured it on the mac, we could connect to the router but not to the internet. Neither could I on the PC. She went and bought another brand new router. Same. This time I went and bought it and configured it all through the pc then just set up the wireless told her the password. She connected through the mac then using the wireless key and hey presto internet on the mac and the pc. Everything worked fine. The mac was doing something to the router, dont ask me what but it killed all 3 we tried.
