i tried dual boot winows and ubuntu. I removed ubuntu, then could no longer boot windows, so i removed everything and tried again, i think i get the grub menu, what can I do. I can install linux again if i want, but not xp. I used g-parted to delete everything.

With the original partitions for both OSs removed all you do now is use GParted if that's the "platform independent" release to see a new NTFS primary created for XP to go onto. If you don't have the live for cd 0.3.3.0 release the XP installer is also capable of creating a new one with that. But GParted simply insures there's no 1-8mb of unallocated drive space later seen in the Disk Management tool.

The live for cd iso image is about 15 down from the top of the download page at http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=115843&package_id=173828

Especially if you installed from a live distro Grub was installed into the mbr seeing XP likely as the second OS. You simply boot up with the XP install cd to arrive at the recovery console once logging onto the Windows installation detected. At the command prompt seen simply type in "Fixboot" and "Fixmbr" to see the boot information rewritten. But since you deleted the exiting partitions the fresh install of XP will automatcally write the new entries needed in the mbr.

thanks a lot pc eye. I just started obsessing about computer about 6 months ago, and wheter you knew it or not, you pretty guided me through building my first computer and choosing software for xp. Im just doing linux now for fun. I really suck at it. If you happen to back here, Ive been wanting to install this compiz fusion theme on ubuntu. What things would i need. I downloaded it on my desktop. I have 3d effects with cube and all.

While having run several distros over a period of time don't feel bad about being a Linux newbie since you're not alone. I had some fun first trying out a Red Hat server type distro some years back until trying the live versions of Mephis, Gentoo, Knoppix, Mandriva, ubuntu, and more recently the Mandriva 2008 beta as well as the 7.10 'gutsy gibbon" until now still trying to get the latest releases for each downloaded. Talk about ssslowww servers the first day that was out I kept getting bumped while trying to download it while it will ready here shortly for an actual look at the 8.04 release.

Since the ISP still doesn't carry Linux drivers I've been keeping a few live onhand for data recovery more then anything else while GParted with the libparted tool works quite well for the partitioning tool. I did find one or two blogs on how to see that installed however. One is seen at http://osnovice.blogspot.com/2007/09/how-to-install-compiz-fusion-updated.html

If someone else(regular ubuntu user) doesn't jump in here with some tips to add browse a ubuntu forum. Often someone will outline a good method for this particular distro.
