Cannot install XP - "no HDD attached"

Hi,

I am trying to reinstall Windows XP on to my laptop but it will not get past the first stage. When I insert the CD it loads the setup files and asks me if I want to repair, install or exit. When I select 'Install' it just tells me that setup needs to exit as there is no hard drive attached (there is, currently has Windows 7 RC on it).

I have tried two different hard drives and two different XP CD's, one original and one with SP3 on it.

Any suggestions? Its a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo PI 1505 laptop with a SATA drive.

Thanks, Doug.

More than likely this error happens because your new computer has a SATA storage controller that isn’t supported natively in XP.
You might have to slipstream the XP drivers into a XP install disc unless someone knows different :)

Thanks for the quick replies, it works fine with W7.

I had read about that TFT, however it originally had XP on it (its not new, I just tried out W7 before getting a new desktop, and now wanna put XP back on), so I thought that it would probably have had a standard drive/driver? Anyway, I have a driver CD somewhere so hopefully that will have the correct SATA driver if it comes to that.

Unless anyone has an easier solution?

Thanks, Doug.

Look in the bios for the SATA controller option. See if there is an option to change it from AHCI/RAID to IDE mode or native ide mode. That way you won't need the driver.
