Cannot open files

A friend of mine was XP O/S and when he recieves an attachment (thru his hotmail or gmail )such as a word Doc or a jpeg. After he saves it in his folder he tries to open it. He said he gets an error about cannot locate temporary file look somehere else. (something like that). He then goes to his folder which is in my documents and clicks on folder and file and gets same error. He can open word up then open folder and get the file and it opens. Same as photos he can get them thru his photo editor but cannot click on the file and get the photo. He gets same error as the other. Thanks for any advice.

Right Click on the file, click Properties.
"Opens With" lists the default program.
Click "Change" and change it to the program
you want the file extension associated with.
Apply, Ok.

I gave my friend the above advice and it still did not work. He did say he can view the photos. He just could not open the word documents. Perehaps a reinstall in office. Anyother suggestions. Thanks
