hi all,

i have bought some cdr which allows to burn up to 870mb. i am using the nero6 software and i have set the overburning options according to the instructions (provided with the cd pack).

when i started to burn the file to the cdr (file size 750mb), it said the cdr only has 702mb and require a bigger size cdr. after that, i have check the cdr size from the "my computer", and it also displays the cdr only has 702mb.

i am using a combo drive (DVD, CDR, CDRW), would it be any chance that my combo does not support disc over 700mb?? i am not sure cos i am a novice to overburning.

also, i have tried to update the firmware but i cannot find the combo model (by using pc wizard), the following are the details

IDE Controller : SiS5513 EIDE Controller (A,B step)
IDE Channel : #2 - Master Drive
Manufacturer : COMBO
Model : IDE4816CO
Revision : VER 0053
Interface : ATA
IORDY : Yes
LBA Mode : Yes
DMA Mode : Yes
Multiword DMA Mode : 2
PIO Mode : PIO 4
UDMA Mode max. : 4 (ATA-66)
UDMA Mode Enabled : 4 (ATA-66)
Rotation Control : CLV

could someone please give me some suggestions for the problems >_<"""" thx

Try going by Nero 6's burning instructions. You will need data compression software to burn anything over a certain size to a standard cd-r. Nero was written to burn to standard formatted cd and dvd blank media. Zip files, rar, iso images, and other files are considered compressed archives.

He's not asking for compression utilities and formats. And he doesn't have standard CD-R's. Nor does he have DVD's.

If the burner lacks support for overburning the alternative method would be data compression. One method of testing if the burner is capable is to run the overburning test of CDSpeed in Nero and verify the results by burning an audio or data cd.

Well, I looked into it. That burner is made by BTC. Their website totally sucks, but I finally managed to get the info I needed. The drive does not appear to support overburning.

It is possible that a flash will fix that, and BTC offers a web utility to do that if you feel brave. You can visit their site at:

Here's the conclusion of one article at Tom's Hardware that covers this pretty good.

CDR-99: The Lowdown On Oversized CD Blanks

The CD-R21, CD-R74 and CD-R80 formats are based on the CD standard, which was established some time ago. The latest formats, CD-R90 and CD-R99, have been around for about two years. According to its specifications, the CD-R99 can hold up to 99 minutes of music, or a data volume of about 870 MB - this is an increase of 34 percent from the standard CD-R74s. This feat was accomplished by drawing the tracks closer together and by utilizing portions of the lead-out area for data. Some manufacturers who have CD burners on the market today claim that they can handle oversized CDs. Such is the case with the Asus CRW-3212A, which we test in this article. Our practical test shows whether or not users actually have access to this feature. http://www.tomshardware.com/2002/04/11/overburning/index.html

hi and thx for your advice. it is a nice software from SirKenin and good article from PCeye.

i have checked the combo firmware and it doesnt need any update.

actually i have managed to overburn the files onto the cds. what i have done was updating my nero6 software to the latest version (ver6.6.1.4). after that, i go into the nero6 "general" and "expert features" setup to change the max. cd size...then it works.

actually, i have done the same config for the nero6 "before" updating the software, but it didnt work. it seems wired, anyway, it works now and thx all

Heh. That's really cool. Glad it works. They must have done something to the driver for that unit in the latest release perhaps...?
