Can't access control panel?

Rhysenn

New Member
I need a little help, I can't open my control panel. I was going to delete a game from add/remove programs and it won't work.
When I try to open the control panel it will open a window, try to load, and then just close.

I ran a virus check ( I use McAfee) and it says my computer is clean.
I use Windows Vista 64.

oh, and something else I noticed, I tried to use Daemon tools to mount a cd and it said I still had to put a Cd in the drive. So I put a dvd in and it still said the same thing.

Its probably obvious, but I don't know too much about computers. So any help is appreciated.

error!

Do you get an error report when control panel closes?

I will venture that its a virus causing your problem. Can you download anything? If so then lets get started.

Follow the instructions on this link:

http://www.computerforum.com/131398-important-please-read-before-posting.html

I know it says read before posting, its from a different forum "room", its located in the Security section of Computer Forum. Anyway, post back here with your results.

Questions?

There is no error message when the control panel closes.

try this:
Start
In the box that says "Search Programs and Files"
imput:
"control" without the quotes
After you imput that look up in that menu and search
for "Control Panel" and right click on him
and choose "Run as Administrator" and see if he can load
correctly the control panel.
I think it have something about your rights as user.
Hope that helps

heres what well try

Lets try to fix this. Here is what I did on my fiancees computer.

Open services.msc (just type it in the vista search bar at the bottom of the start menu)

the go to software licensing and click "restart" at the top left
Highlight "SL UI Notification Service" and click "start" at the top

Let me know if that works. Its a very common problem, and you may want to get Vista update SP2. Just go to Microsoft.com and go to the update tab and continue. You'll get to updates and then install it.

when I right click on it it doesn't give me an option to run it as administrator. I don't know if it makes a difference or not, but my account is the administrator account.

It doesn't matter if you have an adminstrator account or not, sometimes you still have to right click on the item and click on run as administrator. Have you tried using system restore to fix the issue? Do you remember when you were able to get into control panel?

It should give you the option to run as admin.
Try this then:
-Start
-msconfig
-Hit enter
-go to tab that says Startup
-click in the button that says disable all
-Click apply
-Click OK
-Restart the computer
-Check f you can open the control panel like that

Agree.
Try to remenber when the control panel was working and run the system restore before that date.
That should do the trick too.

So I did a system restore, but I wasn't sure how long ago my control panel stopped working, I haven't had to use it in a while. I restored me pc to Jan 13 which was the day before I installed a program called Systran.

When my computer turned back on the first thing I did was open the control panel and it seemed to be working fine, it opened but it didn't actually load anything, just a blank window that said control panel.
I closed it and tried to open it again and its once again closing as soon as it opens.

I though I should try and restore it to an earlier date. But when I went back in to system restore my only option is to undo the restore I just did.
Should I do this? and if I do will it then let me choose another date?

There should be an option somewhere on that page to pick a different date. I don't have a vista machine with me right now to test it out. But I remember seeing it when I worked on one a while back.

There is the option for choosing a different restore point, but the farthest it goes back is the day I chose, Jan 13. Before I did the restore it went back into December.

I know i've done it before, just can't remember how. If your only choice is to undo the restoration, then do that and then see if you can go back farther this time. In the meantime, I will try to remember what I did to go back farther on a clients machine.

Why is Vista so difficult most of the time?

possible?

I was sitting here eating dinner, watching seinfeld and a thought came to me. Would it be possibleto fix this using a repair install of the OS.

If it isnt virus related that may do it. Its what I would try at this point.

in fact if you don't mind, yo can just use other software to uninstall your game, google'free uninstall software"you will get tons of software to solve your problem.
your second problem~~~~if you don't mind you should tell us what that cd(name of game or software) is, i think nobody can solve problem without more info, right

I undid my system restore and tried to do a restore again, but it still won't let me go back before the 13th, the day I chose before.

What exactly would I have to do in a repair install of the os?

And Its not a big deal if I can't uninstall the game, I'll probably play it again anyway. I;m just concerned about not being able to access my control panel.

Try to uninstall all that programs you installed on latest few days! Uninstall and your antivirus too just to test it if the antivirus causes any conflict.
