can't capture video

I have a firewire cable to capture video from my sony handycam. It used to work fine, but now I can't capture video using MovieMaker. It says "a video capture device has not been detected." It's been a while since I used it, is there something I'm missing?

There could be many many reason's that can amount to that particular scenario. When you say that you don't use it too much, are you referring to the cable or the handycam? Other things that you can consider is any updates or modifications you have done or added to your pc thus far including updates, etc.

If you have the software disk onhand look in the device manager for the device listing for there. It may or may not have a yellow mark next to it but right click on it to choose the update driver option. Often drivers are made inactive while still being seen as working properly after a lengthy period of time.

You can also use the uninstall option there if refreshing them doesn't work to see Windows redetect the device upon a system restart. Then you select the type of device and browse to the driver folder on the cd. The idea is to have Windows recopy and reinstall the drivers needed.

Hi sorry but this may seem stupid but have you tried playing the tape on the cam when capturing in Windows Movie Maker?
