can't connect between 2 routers and 2 pcs

the main modem is downstairs. i have one family computer downstairs hooked up to a d-link 524 router which has an ethernet cable that goes all the way upstairs for my room. my computer is all the way on the 3rd floor and i hooked the ethernet cable from downstairs to the router in my room and used spare ethernet cables to hook it up for my pc and xbox live. Some reason i can't get any connection upstairs. when i go into network connections, on my computer, it says internet gateway disabled and I can't re-enable it. The router i have in my room is a d-link dgl-4300. I tried direct connect from downstairs to my room and that works but I want to be able to use both my pc upstairs and have a connection downstairs also. any ideas? thanks in advance.

Note: I did switch routers. the previous router, a linksys, didnt have issues, i bought this d-link dgl-4300 to help fix some lag issues that I had with the linksys and its driving me crazy that im having this problem. I have updated firmware and everything. PLEASE HELP!
 
you need to run DHCP server off of one router and not both. Go into your router settings, and give the second router a different IP, ie 192.168.1.2 and turn off DHCP server, then run your cat 5 cable from router to router. Make sure that your secondary points to your primary for dns and gateway, ie 192.168.1.1

sorry im very new to this stuff, so if you can please provide me with step by step instructions. I'D REALLY REALLY APPRECIATE IT. thanks
 
ok hook one router up to the modem and run the ethernet up to the second router but before you do that unplug the second one from the first and make sure your computer is pluged or connected to the second router

go into your internet explorer or monzilla and type 192.168.1.1

it will come up with a log on screen type in what ever username and password you have for that router

once your in go to setup and change the dhcp to static ip

and find where it says router ip or something like that and change it to 192.168.1.2

thats all i can walk you through because ive never used mutiple routers on one connection
 
ok....

you need to telnet into each router and set it up via your web browser. Download your router's manual if you don't know how.

Then on the main router (which ever one you want to run the DHCP and stuff) set it up for the internet connection, on the secondary router turn off your DHCP server and set the DNS server and gateway to the IP of the main router. You will also need to change the IP of your router, if that is even supported on your model.

Every router is different so you may need to get the manual from the manufacturer.
 
Thanks for all your comments guys. Unfortunately I couldn't resolve the problem. I tried EVERYTHING you guys suggested. I went on the D-link router website, changed my ip address, turned off DHCP, put the ip of the downstairs router as the DNS and gateway for the one upstairs and none of this worked. I did notice that everytime I changed the ip, i couldn't even log onto the router website..which is 192.168.0.1, by default that was the ip for the router downstairs, so i decided to change the upstairs router's ip to 192.168.0.2 and it didn't work. This is what it says in D-link's router website

"Use this section to configure the internal network settings of your router. The IP Address that is configured here is the IP Address that you use to access the Web-based management interface. If you change the IP Address here, you may need to adjust your PC's network settings to access the network again."
^^This could be why I'm having problems. I change the IP on the router but it says I would have to adjust the pc network settings..iono anyone know how to fix this?

I would do all the other stuff like remove DHCP etc, then i would change the ip, save settings, reboot the router, go downstairs plug the main ethernet into the downstairs router, then plug the other ethernet cable from the downstairs router into the 1 upstairs and nothing would happen. I really don't know what else to do. I thought that if I bought two routers of the same brand it would work easier but it turns out to be more difficult because they both have the same ip. when i had the linksys router it worked fine because linksys routers have different ips. :(

Temporarily Resolved: I just replaced the downstairs router ,D-Link 524, to my old Linksys one and it worked perfectly. Personally, as long as theres internet downstairs then I'm fine with it. I needed this mostly for the DGL-4300 I bought. So thanks for all your help but I basically solved it myself. Basically, Linksys has a different ip address then the d-link in my room so it worked fine, when before both d-link routers had the same ip address so it was difficult.
